A House with a Hollywood History: New Street, Matlock

Some houses have more stories to tell than others…

We were delighted to recently sell a lovely period property on New Street, Matlock. A beautiful home with a rather special piece of film history. If the house looks familiar, there’s a good reason. Back in 1969, this specific house on New Street appeared on the big screen in Ken Russell’s Women in Love, the acclaimed adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s novel. The house was used as the home of Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen, played by Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden. In the opening of the film, the sisters leave their home and make their way along New Street towards Bank Road, meaning that this very front door had a starring role nearly 60 years ago.

And now, all these years later, the house is still standing proudly on New Street.

It’s always fascinating to see how much, or how little a place can change over the years. Comparing the scenes from the film with photographs of the house today, many of the features of the property and its surroundings are still instantly recognisable.

A little bit of Matlock film history

New Street wasn't the only Matlock location to feature in Women in Love. Other parts of the town also appeared in the film, including the area around Bank Road and County Hall, while St Giles’ Church was used for the wedding scene. So, while we may have been selling a a home on New Street , we were also saying goodbye to a little piece of Matlock’s film history. And that’s what makes houses so interesting, you never quite know what stories are hidden behind the front door.
